Steve Reich's 'Clapping Music' is a very simple but inspirational piece of music - for 'patterns and accidents' the rhythmic pattern on one side is shifted a half-beat each time in a similar way. Add to that a dub-inspired bassline, a polyrhythmic drum undertow and 3-part vocals and a minimalist starting point becomes maximalist very quickly. The effects disruptions start off dense and then gradually recede as the music moves towards relative simplicity and the two rhythms slide back into sync.
